Upgrading RAM in an Acer Aspire One d257-13404

Recently, a friend brought an Acer Aspire One d257-13404 to me to clean up. It is his 12 year old daughter’s computer, and for some reason, she couldn’t open any browsers. I did, eventually, discover the reason the browsers wouldn’t open. You can read about that here. At one point in all of this, we considered finding a way to reformat the hard drive and re-install Windows. To install any version of Windows 7 other than the Starter edition for small laptops, the system had to have more RAM.

My son also has an Aspire One, and I did upgrade his RAM shortly after he got his. With his, I had to remove the motherboard to get to the ram. On this model, it’s possible to do it without removing the motherboard. I’ll be checking his when I get a chance.

To access the RAM module in these little babies is a little more complicated than it is in most full sized laptops. You start, of course by taking out the battery and removing the 3 screws on the back side of the computer. After removing the three screws on the back, turn it over and open so you can access the keyboard. There are five clips on the top of the keyboard, behind the Esc, F4, F8, F12, and the Del keys. I suggest starting in the middle and working your way out to each side. I used an old gift card to disengage the clips and help keep the free parts free. After freeing the top of the keyboard, gently pull the keyboard in the direction of the screen to free the other side. The keyboard is connected to the computer by a somewhat fragile strip of wires. You DO NOT need to disconnect this. By gently moving the keyboard aside, you can easily access the door screws in the compartment.

Remove all the screws that are labeled “Door”. To do this, you will have to move the keyboard around a little bit. There are some towards the back of the compartment and some near the front. I believe there are a total of six screws. After removing all the door screws, you will be ready to open the back door. To do this, you firmly apply pressure to the door latch located at the lower, right side of the hard drive. You will need to be holding the computer a bit off the table to do this.

At this point, close the cover and turn the computer over exposing the back side once more. The memory module is on the hinge side offset slightly to the left. Release the clamps on the current module, firmly pull the module straight out and reverse action with the new.

Now, just follow the rest of the directions in reverse order as well. Your Acer should be all back together. Make sure your computer is on AC power before turning on again. When you turn it on for the first time, it may take a few minutes for the system to configure itself to the increased RAM. ENJOY!!

English – The World’s Universal Language Part 2

Part Two

This is part two of this series because I realized, after finishing the last post, that I didn’t address the Language part of my post.

Crossing International Lines

The internet works so well because English is the world’s universal language. Most people in the world can speak a few words of English, no matter from where they hail or their first language. People on the internet seem to understand that people all over the world can understand something written in English. It is also easier to translate pages to and from English.

One thing I run into daily is the slaughtering of the English language. I understand that when you are trying to communicate in a language other than your native language, it’s tough. I speak some German and some Navajo. I slaughter those myself. I really do understand.

It seems that the only people that comment on this site are foreigners. I have removed nearly all the comments from this site because the comments are so hard to read. After a little research, I figured out that many of the comments were originally written in another language, then translated via google translate or some other translation machine, then pasted into the comment box.

Translation applications cannot replace knowledge of syntax, rules of grammar, and use of slang when translating text. The resulting translation is mediocre at best. Sifting through these comments, daily, I find that I am annoyed beyond words that so many people would post poorly worded comments just to post their link to my site, and that the links lead primarily to sites in other languages. Using google’s page translate function, I am able to attempt to discover the topic of the content, but given that a machine is translating, sometimes even that is frustrating beyond words.

When google’s bots go out to determine how many and the source of links to and from a given site, they don’t consider the language of the pages on which the links appear, only the number of links. If site owners had to police the quality of the links, I believe this would be avoided.

Just because English translates so well to so many languages doesn’t mean that other languages translate well to English. Please keep this in mind if you want your comment to be visible on my site. While google doesn’t require it, I do try to police the quality of the links on this site. If I understand what is said, and the topic of your link, then chances are, the true readers of my site will, also. That is the criteria for adding a link to a comment.

win32/bamital.p or win32/bamital.(any letter)

My discovery of the bamital.x Virus

For more than a week, I’ve been working on an Acer Aspire One Dd257 for a friend. When I got the computer, the complaint was neither Firefox nor Chrome would open. What I discovered was that the program would open, just not as a visible window. The application was open according to the task manager, but there was no open window. Finally, I remembered I could open the resource manage and see exactly what was using all the cpu resources. Surprise, surprise, it was Internet Explorer. Many multiple instances of Internet Explorer.

At that point, I knew I was dealing with a really bad virus. I didn’t know which one, or where to find it, but I knew it was there. I had already run AVG, Avast, Avira, and Malwarebites and the system had come up clean. I enabled Windows Defender, the Windows anti-virus component, and ran that while I researched other anti-virus programs.

Microsoft Security Essentials

I run Malwarebites intermittently on my own computer, and it seemed to work just fine. And up until this time, I had stayed away from using any Microsoft add-ons or anti-virus programs. While reading many reviews, I came across several really positive reviews of Microsoft Security Essentials. I decided to give it a try. I installed MSE, and ran a full scan. The scan took more than 6 hours to complete, but it did find a medium threat virus on my system. I figured it was worth a shot on the Acer One.

I downloaded and installed MSE on the Acer. (If you are wondering how to download and install a program when you can’t access your browsers, check back here later today or tomorrow. I will be posting that next.) After MSE installed, it automatically went to update to get latest definitions. Before it completed getting the definitions, win32/bamital.p had attempted to hijack it, and I got an alert saying I had to restart the computer to finish removing the threat. I tried to restart the computer, but after installing MSE, Windows wouldn’t load at all.

After several failed attempts to restart the computer, I resorted to the Alt+F10 repair/restore function. I really didn’t want to restore and have to do it all again, but I didn’t see that I had another choice at this point. Remember, here, that Acer One’s are netbooks. They have no CD/DVD drives. The come with just 1Gb of ram, also. They run Windows 7 Starter Edition for Small Notebook PC’s. It’s the only edition of Windows 7 that can run 1Gb of ram. They do not come with repair discs or other media to re-install Windows if it crashes. Ten percent of the internal hard drive is dedicated to the repair and restore program. Repair rarely works.

After restoring the computer to the latest restore point, just before I started working on it, I downloaded MSE again. This time it got part way through the scan before bamital.p started interfering. I had run MSE on several of my own computers by this time, so I was familiar with the process. What I was getting on the Acer was not the expected process. Every few minutes a window would pop up saying I needed to restart the computer to complete the cleaning of the bamital.p threat. The box said the threat was sever and needed immediate attention. I ignored these pop-ups. I was determined to let the scan finish, letting the program work the way it was supposed to work.

When the scan was about 5/6 of the way through, bamital.p shut down the computer. When I tried to restart, Windows wouldn’t load, again. I did the Alt+F10, again, and was restored to the point right before I installed MSE earlier that day.

Lost Cause

I have determined that the only way to get rid of this virus is to wipe your computer clean and re-install Windows. This is a problem when you don’t have a CD drive from which to re-install, but I have another option in mind for this. I have a jump device that can connect a SATA, PATA, or IDE hard drive to another computer via USB port. I will need to install 2Gb’s of RAM to do this, also. Here’s hoping it works!

English – The World’s Universal Language

In the age of the internet, it is easier than ever to cross national borders. No matter where you are in the world, the internet can take you to far away places in an instant. In my opinion, it is the biggest bonus about living in the 21st century.

There are so many great things about living in this age. Anything you want to learn can be found on the internet. Communicating with distant friends and relatives is at the tip of your fingers and is marginally free. Medical advances have people living longer than any other period in history. Motor vehicles are producing less toxic pollution than any other time in history. And, mainstream reporters are not our only source of information on current events.

Learn Anything on the Internet

Fifty years ago, before the internet, finding sources of information on any given subject was a crap shoot. A person had to go to the library and pour over the card catalog and the reader’s guide to periodicals to determine the best resources for the information he desired. Once you determine which resources you were going to use, you went and got the books off the shelf, then prayed that there was some useful information!

Many times, there was one or two items of interest that you would have to pour through the book to find. After hours and hours of reading and searching, you might find that for which you were looking, but then again, you might not. Same thing with magazine and newspaper articles. It was hit or miss and took an immense amount of time and dedication.

Today, we have google. I know that google is not infallible, but I have found that it’s a whole lot faster to sort through the unimportant pages google recommends than to sort through information in a reference book format. There is also the wonderful technique of searching the page via cont+f. Using cont+f, you can search for a specific word or phrase and be taken directly to each instance of the term on the page. This method allows you to quickly determine if a page google has given you is relevant to your qest for knowledge. If it isn’t you can close the tab and saved yourself anywhere from a few minutes to a few months.

Communication

The internet provides people with a marginally free way to communicate with people around the world. In 1985, a 90 minute phone call between Nebraska and Virginia cost $311.00 USD. Today, a person in the United States can “chat” with someone in, say, Abu Dabi for hours for no more than what they are already paying for their internet service. It is not considered “free”, but rather, “marginally free” because you do pay for your internet service, and the computer used has been paid for at some point by someone. Marginally free means that it didn’t cost any more to talk than not to talk under these circumstances.

It isn’t just that you can communicate over long distances, it’s that you can actually speak via microphone and speakers, and even see each other in real time as well! There are many free applications for video conferencing! The experience has been enhanced, and the cost has been dramatically decreased. That’s all happened in the past 25 years!

Medical Advances

This statement is more subjective than objective. There have been some real advances in this area. Dr. Berzynski, in Huston, Texas, has made some real advances in cancer care and treatment. I’m sure there are other cases, but I am going to focus on Berzynski’s research for this section as this can be objectively measured.

Dr. Berzynski has discovered a real and lasting cure for neoplastic cancers. His work has been so successful that the state of Texas and the United States government has diligently worked to steal it from him. Brain neoplasms are nearly always fatal, except under the care of Dr. Berzynski. The mainstream method of treating cancer is toxic in itself. Chemotherapy kills all cells, not just the cancerous ones.

Dr. Berzynski’s discovery, antineoplastons, are completely non-toxic, and are closer to organic compounds, to the human body. In healthy people, the body creates these compounds to stave off neoplastic cancers. These compounds are absent in neoplastic cancer patients. Dr. Berzynski discovered a method of synthesizing these compounds to nearly exactly mimic the ones created in healthy people. The patient, therefore, has no side effects from the treatment, and is eventually cured of the cancer while maintaining the other aspects of his health.

There are several videos on youtube that you can watch for more information about Dr. Berzynski.

Toxic Emissions

As late as the early 1980′s, gasoline contained lead. The lead was spewed into the air for the world to breath. Lead is a heavy metal that settles in the brain causing the brain to slow down. In children, lead can cause sever learning and other disabilities.

While I do not believe in any sort of governmental regulation, I do believe it was the right thing to develop vehicles that could run on un-leaded gasoline. The level of lead in the air, especially in densely populated areas, is a big concern for parents. Lead can make a smart person dumb. The younger the brain, the faster it happens.

Current Events

Another thing I love about the internet is that the internet is a great source of non-mainstream information. The mainstream media consists of, essentially, puppets on a string. The conglomerates for whom these “reporters” work dictate the “news” they can share with the public. Censorship is alive and well in the United States. The internet is a cost effective way for people to self publish. Real reporters can investigate stories and report them on their own piece of cyber-space.

This site is a perfect example. I can write whatever I choose! As long as I do not take copy writed materials from other people, I can present my opinions, research, and just plain thoughts here. No one can tell me what to say on my site. It’s truly awesome for freedom of information. Sometimes you just want another opinion on a subject, other times, you just know there’s something missing from a story you heard. Look around the internet for a while, and you can get the whole story. You have to be a discerning consumer, however. There is a lot of false information here as well. With a little critical thinking, however, you can sort out the frauds from the facts.

We live in a great point in history. Don’t give up, get informed!

What IS the Point of the Political Party System Today?

I have seriously been putting off delving into the upcoming presidential elections. I vote in every election, and I always try to be informed on the issues and the candidates when I vote. This election period has had me sticking my head in the sand. I can’t see a real winner for United States getting elected. It doesn’t even matter where the candidates say the stand on the issues. I know nothing is going to really change.

Gary Johnson

There is a candidate that has proven that he will stand up for what he believes. He was successful in making profound and lasting changes in New Mexico during his time as governor. As governor, he didn’t flip flop on campaign promises. He used his power of veto as it was meant to be used. If a bill passed that was full of pork, it was vetoed. If there were other issues concealed in the bill, he vetoed it.

He balanced the budget and cut taxes. He never raised taxes. During his time in office, schools were improved. He cut 1,200 government jobs without firing anyone. He created 20,000 new jobs in a state with around 1,600,000 total people.

His principles are sound and his goal for the United States is sound and achievable. His company, Big J Enterprises, is still growing and doing well. I have first hand knowledge of these facts. I have lived through them, witnessed them first hand. Not only have I already voted for the man twice, but my ex-husband still works for Big J.

I have always hated wasting my vote. Whenever you vote for a candidate that has no real chance of making it, you are wasting a vote because, of the candidates that have a chance, there is usually a lesser evil, and wasted votes usually take away from the lesser evil, not the greater evil. This year, I’m finding it hard to find the lesser evil.

NOT Gary Johnson

There isn’t a single difference between the rest of the candidates in this year’s primary election. They are arguing over non issues in an attempt to keep from having to make too many promises that they know they won’t keep.

Bailouts are going to continue for big business and banks. The economy isn’t going to be able to recover because no one in office really cares about the economy. No one is going to repeal Obamacare: many of the people that passed the forced pay legislation own stock in the companies that benefit from the legislation. Everything will remain status quo.

Proof

The GOP has excluded Johnson from all the polls that determine who will be allowed in the debates. By not listing Gary Johnson as an option in the polls, they rid themselves of having to explain why they are keeping him out of the debates. They simply say, “He didn’t score high enough in the polls.” What they fail to say is that they didn’t give him a place in the polls so he could score in the polls. Most people don’t realize this is the way they determine who will be at the debates. Until today, I didn’t realize it, either.

It is my hope that each and every person reading this, whether United States citizen or not, understand that status quo in any government is a daunting force. The only way to change the status quo is to actively work to change it. Anything can happen if everyone works according to their beliefs. Work for your own benefit, and everyone will benefit!

Mrs. Obama Proves She’s the President’s Perfect Mate

2 Records Broken

This week, it seems that people around the world helped break one, and Michelle Obama single handedly broke the other. Ergo, two records were broken. One is recorded by the Guinness Book of World Records. The second is only recorded by the citizens with minds that have the ability to think and reason!

The “News” Story

I just read a featured news story on Yahoo about the record Mrs. Obama organized the event that broke the world record for the most people recorded doing jumping jacks in a 24 hour period. This is really a cool record! More than 300,000 people around the world helped break this record. The organization was probably a logistics nightmare.

Admittedly, she did have help organizing the event. National Geographic Kids actually did a lot of the work in support of Mrs. Obama’s bid: Actually, it was in support of her “Let’s Move!” initiative, but the fact remains that she had the pull to get National Geographic Kids involved.

This is where she broke record two!

The “Real” Story

The second record Mrs. Obama broke is that she is the hypocritical first lady we’ve ever had! That may be a slight exaggeration or over generalization, but it’s the way it seems right now.

She can promote a “Let’s Move!” initiative without advocating for school recesses?

“More than anything, I want to say, thanks to every single young person who showed that exercise isn’t just good for you, but that it’s fun too,” Mrs. Obama said.

This is a direct quote from the story on yahoo. What is she telling the children of our great nation? What I get is that exercise can only be fun when it’s an organized event. It’s usually fun to be part of a world wide event, even if the specific activity isn’t all that fun to the participant.

I would bet that I could find 100 people who would do jumping jacks at the same time to break a record. I would also bet that maybe one or two of them would find it enjoyable enough to continue doing jumping jacks outside that specific event.

What about free play? Free play time allows children time to explore the things they can do and develop new interests. Shy kids get a chance to marginally participate in group sports to check their interest in different group sports. That’s just one thing that free play, in the form of recess, provides.

Recess also provides a much needed reprieve from the pressures of the classroom. Adults get a federally mandated 15 minute break in every four hour shift of work, but kids are required to sit for hours on end in a classroom. On top of that, they are required to think and process information on demand.

I want to know why no one else is questioning this line of thinking!!
